City of Joburg’s Rea Vaya: ITS Project Management Services

The City of Joburg was the first City in the continent to roll-out Intelligent Transport Systems for its Bus Rapid Transit network. Gauteng Department of Roads & Transport: Digitization of Bus Routes

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport embarked on a process of standardising public transport data in Gauteng. As part of this, they needed to digitise route information of the various subsided bus operators in Gauteng. NALE Technologies was appointed to convert the information on subsidized routes, including stops, into a digital format that can be used on various GIS tools.
The accuracy of the pathways had to adhere to the underlying street network and be on the correct side of the road. A total of 2,208 routes (or 136,823 km’s of routes) were digitised, and all the data was submitted in the GTFS format for possible integration to external tools (e.g., Google-Maps).

Council for Scientific & Industrial Research: Route Adherence/deviation

NALE Technologies was appointed to install tracker devices onto buses in order to collect GIS data. This data was then used to compare the tracked route, to the digitised routes. This entailed the development of a bespoke data analysis tool to compare the two sets of GIS data, and report on any deviations.

  • Revised the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and aligned them to the operational needs of the City.
